Current Trends in Construction in Nigeria Essay I work in a building and civil engineering Company, registered to conduct business in construction, real estate, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering works. Generally, housing and infrastructures are big matters in Nigeria, like it is with most developing economies in the world, and personally I believe Nigeria has the potential to be one of the biggest construction markets on this planet. While the world is still struggling to emerge from the global economic collapse, Nigeria’s construction industry is growing fast and is likely to grow astronomically over the next decade, according to forecasts made in a June 2010 reports by Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics. These trends in every way have necessarily placed a demand on professionals in the construction industry, and in few cases where they are lacking quacks in the industry end up taking advantage, mostly this quacks are responsible for a reasonable amount of collapsed buildings and abandoned infrastructures. Estimates suggest that current growth in the Nigerian construction industry is greater than that of India. Indeed, the report found that â€Å"Nigeria’s population of approximately 154 million is urbanizing at one of the fastest rates in the world, but construction is currently only 3.2 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product. From 2009 to 2020, only Nigeria and India will enjoy higher growth rates than China in their construction output.† ( These trends are generally common around the world but focusing my attention to my present location, construction works are basically addressed as projects, thus there is a union between construction projects and projects management. In construction there is the demand to control and manage human resources, financial resources and even plants and machinery as the case may demand. But the gap between management structures of these resources remains a loop holes for wastage and inefficiency, grossly affecting the quality and standards of buildings and infrastructures. Most ambitions of the Nigeria government- such as creating much-needed housing, improving public services, developing its tourist sector, improving transport links, creating new jobs and eradicating poverty — can be linked to the construction sector and personally my little niche contribution to the construction industry in Nigeria and the world at large- though minute, is not so difficult to outline as I have worked on managing government funded projects which had to do with the development of ICT and Library for a community in the Niger- delta region of Nigeria, I have also worked for a group of foreign investors here in Nigeria where I rendered appropriate construction services aiding to set up and revamp retail stores in Nigeria for a South Africa brand. The outlook of trends for construction is an excellent one and this is having an expanding effect on the global community. â€Å"According to a study published by the Anderson Economic Group, an average of 1.2 million project management positions will need to be filled each year through 2016.† â€Å"The demand for project managers is definitely growing,† says Sheree Rulard, senior recruiting consultant for Beeline RPO, a workforce solutions firm with offices in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada† . Only the capital Abuja and, to a lesser extent, the coastal metropolis of Lagos, has a reasonable road network. Nationwide, road fatalities are one of the most common causes of death. The entire modules appeal to me personally but I foresee† planning and budgeting with risk† as a major module that will provide me insight in the field of construction and improve my personal skill with an adequate planning ability. Most times I spend more of my working hours on construction sites, reviewing and tracking work pace and work standards, where there is on a daily basis an average of about between 50-300 persons working depending on the size and stage of the project and a couple of times am at the office building.

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Maya Angelou was raised in segregated rural Arkansas. She is a poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. She lectures throughout the United States and abroad and is Reynolds professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in North Carolina since 1981. She has published ten best selling books and numerous magazine articles earning her Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominations. At the request of President Clinton, she wrote and delivered a poem at his 1993 Presidential Inauguration. She also wrote and delivered a poem in 1995 titled 'A Brave and Startling Truth' in honor of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Dr. Angelou, who speaks French, Spanish, Italian and West African Fanti, began her career in drama and dance. She married a South African freedom fighter and lived in Cairo where she was editor of The Arab Observer, the only English-language news weekly in the Middle East. In Ghana, she was the feature editor of The African Review and taught at the University of Ghana. In the 1960's, at the request of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ms. Angelou became the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She was appointed by President Gerald Ford to the Bicentennial Commission and by President Jimmy Carter to the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  On the evening of Monday, October 28th, 2002, this great woman visited the faculty, staff, students and guests at Rutgers University. To enter the little gymnasium on College Avenue, where the event would be held and would eventually house nearly 2,000 people, everyone needed a ticket, a ticket that I did not have because they had sold out so quickly. Nevertheless, I was determined to be there. So I adorned myself in the appropriate attire, left my apartment, and at 6:45 found myself on College Avenue in a line that spanned from the doors of the gym all the way to Au Bon Pain. No one seemed to care that it was 30 ° outside that night. Up and down the line you could hear snippets of conversations resonating excitement and anticipation of the night’s event. For some who had seen Dr. Angelou in the past it would be an added treat, but for me it would be a first. I was going through ideas of things to say to the doorperson so they would let me in without a ti cket.

If I could change three things about myself, I think first and foremost, I would change my desirous of food-ness. I got the stomach ache-ness when I was at Japan and tried not to eat so much. Well, to late for regrets now! I am eating now and just ate some ice-cream just now and ate fish chops for dinner. Well, good luck to me! Secondly, I would like to change my laziness. I had been pretty darn lazy through my whole life until now. Except for the time when my sister who is older than me by a year got to go to school and petty little me didn’t get to go. So, I got so interested in learning that I read ALL of my sister’s textbooks. And ever since my sister knew that I knew   that she was learning, made up a lame excuse and threw her homework to me and went to play some stupid computer game like†¦ MINES. Because she doesn’t know how to play it, she just simply pushes some buttons. But now, I inherited her laziness and she inherited my hardworkingness and it’s the other way round than the time we were kids. Lastly, I would like to change the fact that I don’t really have any talents. I’m suck in studying, not really good in sports. I would want my talents to be: singing, dancing and acting. So, I could just be a pop star when I grow up. Well, it’s really nice to be a star, you know, with people fan boy and fan girling you. You just sing, which you awesomely have HUGE talent at and you get tons of money for just ONE song you sing! It would be such an awesome life! Well, its probably pretty obvious that nobody is going to magically materialize from thin air and grant those for me. So seems like I would just need to keep working at it.

2011: In a novel by William Styron, a father tells his son that life â€Å"is a search for justice.† Choose a character from a novel or play who responds in some significant way to justice or injustice.
